Addition Rules

This can be thought of visually as

Mutually Exclusive:

Non-Mutually Exclusive:

Addition Rule (general):

(for an event \(A\) as well as an event \(B\))

\[P(A\text{ or } B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\text{ and } B)\]

When to events are mutually exclusive then \(P(A\text{ and }B)=0\), thus we get

Addition Rule (mutually exclusive):

(for an event \(A\) as well as an event \(B\))

\[P(A\text{ or } B)=P(A)+P(B)\]
